Words used to flow from me — I used to find my magic in the stories I told more than the paintings I created.
I’m not sure when that shifted.
I used to be consumed with writing short stories and weaving connections in all my creations. I couldn’t paint without writing a poem. And that painting would lead to a story that needed to be told. Every project I found myself in, began and closed with words — fueling inspiration, drawing to an end, and weaving some magic.
Some day we’ll be able to measure the power of words. I think they are things. They get on the walls. They get in your wallpaper. They get in your rugs, in your upholstery, and your clothes, and finally in to you.
-Maya Angelou
Writing is my first love. It is demanding, humbling, and will never give you a sense of improvement, but it is what I always find myself being drawn to.
Over the years, I’ve learned that creation, in any form, is about cultivating a relationship. You must feed your expression.
And after 30 days of painting, I knew I had to also feed my writing.
So, 30 days of writing starts today, if you want to join.
Writing isn’t just about words, it’s an act of presence, it’s the art of noticing.
For 30 days, I want to practice my presence. Below are 30 prompts to support each day. I will be setting a timer for at least 30 minutes, but the format in which the words flow is completely up to you — a page, a poem, a letter, a story.
Do each day, do just one day. But, I hope you’ll open yourself up to exploring yourself as I embark on yet another challenge.
Godspeed.
